Pristine Washing washed selected buildings at St Mary’s Catholic Primary School in South Mackay during the school holidays. On this St Mary’s school cleaning job, we spotted a plant growing out of the gutter. When we pulled it out, we discovered it was growing out of a hat.
There are ordinary things you expect to see on an exterior cleaning job: walls, windows, hoses and a few awkward corners. A hat that has become a miniature garden is a little less predictable.
It was a memorable moment during a local school holiday job. Here is a look at the building washing, the school setting and the find that deserved a photo of its own.

A hat in the gutters, with a garden attached
The plant caught our attention first. We could see it growing out of the gutter, but the surprise came when we pulled it out: the plant was growing out of a hat.
The close-up shows green growth covering much of the hat, with leaves and the plant extending from it. It was an unusual find during the school holiday work.
At that point, it was doing a fairly convincing impression of a hanging basket.
We do not know how the hat got up there or how long it had been there. What we can share is the unusual object we found and the photograph taken on the job.
It is also a useful detail for anyone organising exterior maintenance: a building can have things out of sight that are not obvious from the front gate. If there is a particular gutter or high section you want assessed, mention it when arranging the work.
What our St Mary’s school cleaning covered
Our work involved washing some of the school buildings during the holiday break. The scope was selected buildings, rather than a wash of the entire campus.
The photos show the variety around the site: brickwork, painted walls, upper cladding, windows and covered areas between buildings. One action shot captures the washing underway beside an exterior brick wall.
Those details matter when discussing a building wash. Two walls on the same site may have different materials, finishes and access needs. We assess the areas included in the quote and choose an approach suited to them.

For a similar project, our exterior building cleaning service in Mackay is a useful starting point. Tell us which buildings and sides need attention so the quote describes the work clearly.
If brick walls form a large part of the job, you can also read about our brick cleaning services. Include a wide view and close-up photos when enquiring.
Making use of the school holiday window
School holidays give schools an opportunity to arrange exterior work outside the normal classroom timetable. At St Mary’s, that was the window for this building washing job.
For another school, the dates are only one part of the plan. Staff may still be on site, other contractors may be working and some areas may have holiday activities. Access needs to be discussed for the particular premises.
When planning a holiday clean, it helps to identify the buildings first, then agree on the available work period and the person who can organise access. That makes the enquiry more useful than simply asking for a price to “wash the school”.

A closer look around the South Mackay school
St Mary’s Catholic Primary School is on Juliet Street in South Mackay. The blue school sign and brick frontage in our photos make the location easy to recognise.
Wider views show how the buildings sit beside gardens, lawn and sheltered walkways. Those views help put the action shots in context and show why a school clean is best planned around specific areas.

We have also shared a separate school roof cleaning project at West Mackay Primary and Alligator Creek School. That is a different type of job, with its own access requirements. The St Mary’s school cleaning featured here centres on the buildings we washed and our unexpected gutter find.
Three details to include in a school cleaning enquiry
- The buildings and surfaces. Identify each block or frontage and say which walls or other exterior areas you want quoted. Marked-up photos or a simple site plan can help.
- The available dates. Give us the preferred holiday period and any days when staff, contractors or activities will affect access.
- The site contact and access arrangements. Tell us who will meet the team, which gate to use and any site requirements we need to discuss beforehand.
You can send these details through our online quote enquiry. Photos help us begin the conversation; we will advise if a site visit is needed.
Questions about school holiday building washing
Did Pristine Washing wash the whole school?
No. This St Mary’s school cleaning job involved selected buildings during the school holidays. For any new enquiry, we agree on the areas included in the quote.
Was the hat really found in the gutters?
Yes. We first saw a plant growing out of the gutter. When we pulled it out, we discovered it was growing out of a hat. The close-up is a real photo from the job.
Can a school book washing for the next holiday break?
Contact us with the proposed dates, buildings and access details. We can discuss availability and the work needed before confirming a booking.
Are gutters or roofs automatically included in a building wash?
The quote should identify each service. Tell us if you also want gutters or roofs assessed so those areas can be discussed separately from the building walls.
