Our latest painted tile roof cleaning job in West Mackay revealed just how much difference a thorough clean can make. The tiles were so dirty that large areas looked almost black, hiding much of the light painted finish underneath.
We used our Whirlaway surface cleaner to clean the tiles, and the difference became obvious as the work progressed. Beside the sections still covered in dark buildup, the cleaned tiles stood out immediately.
The photos tell the story: a heavily darkened roof, a clear dividing line during cleaning, and a much brighter finish afterwards.

How Dirty Had These West Mackay Roof Tiles Become?
The before photos show heavy, patchy buildup across the tile faces. Some areas still had small patches of the lighter colour showing through, while others were almost completely dark.
From a distance, a roof like this can look as though its colour has changed. Up close, the contrast between the cleaned and uncleaned areas makes it easier to see how much of that appearance comes from deposits on the surface.
On a light painted roof, that difference is particularly noticeable. The dark layer can dominate the whole roof, even when the original colour is still visible around some edges and ridge sections.
This painted tile roof cleaning project gave us a clear example of that contrast.
Painted Tile Roof Cleaning With Our Whirlaway
For this West Mackay job, we used a Whirlaway surface cleaner with our pressure-cleaning equipment to tackle the heavy buildup.
One of the progress photos shows the Whirlaway on the roof, with the cleaning hose running across the tiles. Another captures the dividing line between the light cleaned section and the much darker area still waiting to be cleaned.
Those halfway photos are especially useful. They show the difference on the same roof, within the same image, rather than relying only on separate before and after shots.
The equipment is only part of the decision with painted tile roof cleaning. The condition of the tiles and their coating needs to guide the cleaning method. Using a Whirlaway on this job does not mean it is suitable for every painted roof.

A Brighter Roof Once the Buildup Was Removed
After cleaning, the light beige painted finish was much easier to see across the roof.
The completed photos show a much more consistent appearance along the rows of tiles and around the roof fittings. Compared with the heavily darkened sections in the earlier photos, the change is substantial.
Three details stand out:
- The lighter colour is visible across much larger areas.
- The heavy dark patches no longer dominate the cleaned sections.
- The shape and texture of the tiles are clearer.
That is the appeal of painted tile roof cleaning when surface buildup is affecting the appearance. It can make a noticeable difference to how the existing roof presents.
Results depend on the condition of the coating and the type of staining. Cleaning cannot replace missing paint, reverse fading or repair damaged tiles.
Why Can Some Roof Sections Look Worse Than Others?
When looking at a dirty roof, it helps to consider which sections get shade and how quickly they dry.
Across the Mackay roofs we clean, we often notice heavier staining on southern and western sections. Morning dew, surrounding trees and differences in sunlight exposure can help explain that pattern, although each property needs to be considered individually.
We discuss those observations in our blog about black roof stains, planes, sugar mills and morning dew.
Sun exposure changes with orientation and season. The Australian Government’s Your Home guide to orientation explains those differences in more detail.
The colour of a stain alone does not identify what caused it.
